Arbor Networks Jose Nazario gives an upate on the Estionan cyberwar over at Techrepublic.
He states:
"We do see attacks against big corporations and big governments, and if you look at those attacks, some of them are probably politically motivated as a way of speaking out. I don't think this is going to become as common as seeing people on the streets. But it's something that some governments have to consider much more than I think they needed to five years ago."
There is no doubt in my mind that we will continue to see such attacks. The question is how many of those attacks will be released to the public eye - companies are being held hostage today - either for political or economic reasons. Perhaps the infrastructure is still not good enough to take out a full nation, but as the attacks on Estonia and other countries the past years show, it is only a matter of time before such attacks becomes true threats to democracy and safety.
"Some countries are probably better equipped to handle this than others. "
As with companies and people - some realize the potential threat, and act accordingly. If hide your head in the sand you will get into serious trouble when this kind of attacks happen. Only by taking security seriously can you be prepared.
What can we learn from this? How can you prepare?
