Michael Farnum: No book required - branding is

Submitted by Kai on Thu, 2007-06-28 10:04.

This post is edited - I have made a huge mistake - thinking Michael Farnum to be Marcus Ranum. Wow - that is a mistake not even sleepless nights may explain! I have edited the post to reflect the correct name.

--------------------------------

Michael Farnum, a superhero of security, is having a hard time with people not recognizing him as the authority he is. Of course, after around 20 years in a business where whatever he says and does is hailed upon, it must be easy to get cocky. Guess I need to do a Security Profile on him to see if he really is.

So - Michael had a problem with Douglas Schweitzer's blog post describing bots. And as the helper Michael is, he jumps in and immediately explains that Douglas is mistaking, and then describes a bot as it should be. Of course this starts off a fire.

All this was brought to my attention by Michael posting his frustration on his own blog today. It turns out in the post someone posted a comment on the Douglas story, telling Michael to turn away, since he has not

"written any computer security books "

This should get a gun like Michael to laugh out loud. It sure made me do that. Especially since the comment is made on his own blog!

And I did not laugh only because there are people out there who do not know Michael . But to see Michael actually fire up as he does because someone out there actually do not know about him!

So Michael - the lessen for you and the rest of us is simple. It is not about writing a book - it is about branding. You may write a lot of books, and you might not. If no one knows your name, you are nobody. And to David, you are obviously a nobody. And to impress David, it takes a book!

Imo, there is no need to get angry and fire yourself up just because there are people not recognizing you as the security expert you obviously are to many others. It should wake you up - it might be time to revise your marketing and branding strategy to the changes in the market space?

The point is gone

Hi Michael, first, thank you for taking the time to post a comment - I appreciate that! It shows what a great guy you obviously are. I do recognize that the sting in the post is gone. In my mind, you where Ranum, a well known person - thus I tried to make a point of that. The challenge when the error was discovered is to know what to do - I may delete the hole post - but then no one will see the error, and probably will not understand the reactions. Thus, I decided to only change the name. I may have been wrong. If you prefer, I will delete it completely, as you point out,the point of the original post if lost anyway. --------------------------------------- Posted by: Kai Roer Please post your comment! ---------------------------------------

My rant post

Andy is right. I think you misunderstood my post. I could care less if David has heard of me (obviously he has since he was reading my blog) or considers me an expert. What I was saying was that it is stupid to say a fact is less of a fact because it comes from someone who has not written a book. A fact is a fact, no matter who it comes from. And I have been called a lot worse than "Marcus Ranum", believe me. I consider that an insult to Marcus if anything! Hell, that's like Bambi calling the skunk a flower! "You can call me Marcus if you want to!"

And boy are you right!

Wow, I did wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning - but thanks to Andy I hope I did not make too much of a rampage out there before the error was corrected. Andy is so RIGHT! To call Michael for Marcus is truly stupid and wrong of me. I ask do apologies. However, the point of my post is not to rant about Micheal - I do not agree with the fire in his words, but I do agree with his definition and his reaction to the post by Douglas. My intention was to bring forward the fact that some people out there actually believe you has to write a book before you should open your mouth. And that is just plain stupid IMO. But it also tells us that we may need to revise our strategies with regards to marketing and branding as we go. --------------------------------------- Posted by: Kai Roer Please post your comment! ---------------------------------------

Post

You are one cold hearted fellow. It's bad enough that you totally misread MICHAEL FARNUM's post and his intentions but to call him Marcus Ranum just to prove your point is WRONG.
